NBA Finals Game 5 Research (June 15th)

Celtics vs. Lakers

The Lakers, who covered consistently during the early rounds of the playoffs, have yet to cover 1 round during these NBA Finals. In fact, they are in danger of going down for the entire series 4-1. After going up around 21 points they clearly lost focus and allowed Boston to storm back in the 3rd quarter, one can only imagine that if the Lakers kept their focus, it is they that can look to go up 3-2 heading into Boston, rather than facing elimination at home in Game 5. In fact, Boston has covered the last 6 times these 2 teams have met, which many do not realize. Can you imagine going into half being up 18 in the NBA Finals only to lose that game from your fingertips by getting pounded by 16 points in the 3rd quarter? Give Eddie House his due for scoring double-figures in that game. Also note that the last 2 ballgames have gone under as well. I have seen it happen so many times that a team that has a big lead at half, loses its focus and loses a game outright in the 2nd half, only to come back the next game (which you can be sure that Coach Jackson will hammer into his players this is do or die) and keep their focus throughout and win this game. The public breaks down 55% in favor of Los Angeles and although I lean on the under yet again (I do think if the Lakers win this game, then Game 6 in Boston will go over), I think that L.A. will leave everything out on the floor on June 15th. I expect Boston to give it a great run, but I wouldn't be surprised if they look to close this series out in Boston rather than L.A., in many ways, the Boston players are thinking "mission accomplished" in that they took 1 out of 3 at least in L.A. and their focus will be returning home and taking 1 out of the next 2 ballgames in Boston, where they have consistently won in the playoffs. Of course, I don't expect the Lakers to lay down in game 6 or in any elimination game and that is why I believe at least the 6th game in boston will likely go over b/c the Lakers will be an active dog, the straight up winner in that game is up in the air imo.

WNBA 2008 Updated Research

WNBA Notes Overall: Upon Return, I'll have spreadsheet Notes Released on Each Team. I'll make some of the best trends for each team on my spreadsheet available here on the daily research thread.

I had the Sun predicted to finish 2nd in the East behind Detroit, but they sit atop at 8-1 currently. Keep in mind that Atlanta has yet to win a game as I have said it is so difficult to bring in decent talent in the wnba in the free agent market as talent is limited and must be brought through the draft, therefore, Atlanta continues to get trounced on the road, although they will begin to play some overs at home imo as they can be active dogs once they mesh together as currently it is just a motley crew of players. Keep in mind that the Sparks are still 5-2 and still continue to play road overs and they beat the Mercury twice this year as they have been the greatest dissappointment at 2-5 this year. The Monarchs seem to be getting used to their new coaching as they have won 3 straight as they are on an up trend and take a look at the Silver Stars now having won 4 in a row at home - all 4 home games, and having lost all 4 road games this year. There is a clear situational split here between home and road games for San Antonio. Finally note that the Sun are road warriors at 3-0 on the road, Seattle is 6-0 at home and Washington has been dismal on the road with terrible performances as they are 0-5 on the road.
