NFL
Pittsburgh vs. Miami
The Steelers on Monday Night Football is typically a very solid wager. This team also comes off a frustrating loss to the Jets on the road and Mike Tomlin supposedly ripped into his team pretty hard after that loss as he believed they were a less physical ballclub. Despite the Dolphins being winless, the weather is supposed to be nasty for this game, Beck does have a game underneath his belt and this Defense did decent on the road against the Eagles. The Steelers have already covered once on Monday Night Football and it will be difficult for a team to cover 2 MNF games, but possible - after all, Denver failed to cover both MNF games this year. The Dolphins do have the worst overall defense in the league and they face one of the NFL's best defenses in the league that will be without Troy P. as well as the offense will be without Santonio Holmes. Of course, Hines Ward is still expected to play. The offensive line of Pitt cannot let Big Ben get sacked 7 times again and this team will look to avoid yielding another 100 yard performane to either Ricky Williams or Chatman as this team gave up over the century mark to Thomas Jones. The Steelers have had all 3 of their losses come on the road but have been dominant at home. The Dolphins are 0-5 on the road and the Steelers to their credit are 5-0 at home. Pittsburgh has lost back to back covers and they missed their first cover at home against Cleveland recently. The Dolphins have scored 27 points in their last 3 games while the Steelers have scored 31 and 38 in their last 2 ballgames at home. The weather is supposed to be sub 40 degrees and possibly raining tonight, so keep that in mind. The Dolphins have the 22nd best offense and 19th best defense in the league and surprsingly the 3rd best defense as it relates to pass defense. Pittsburgh is the 10th best offensive in the league, number 2 rushing the ball, although willie parker struggled last week and he should have a bounce-back week today and this defense is the number defense in the league, in points allowed and in pass defense. Not to mention, this team is 3rd in the league in run defense as well. Miami might be 3rd in the league in pass defense, but they are nearly dead last in rush defense and points allowed in the league as well.
NBA
Utah vs. New York
The Knicks were finally able to win a ballgame, albeit it came at the expense of the struggling Bulls. The Jazz played yesterday in an impressive win over the Pistons as they held another team to less than a 100 points although it didn't look like that was going to be the case after the first quarter. This team has a great tandem between Boozer and Williams and with a great shooting guard from razorback country and with Okur and AK as role players, this team has its players who know what their respective role is. This team is looking to be a better road team as they have talked about it and they get another chance here as they face the Knicks. The last 2 times these 2 teams have played, both games have gone into overtime. The Knicks have played 4 straight unders and I have spoken about the Jazz being on a relative under trend and are focusing on defense. The Knicks have also scored in the mid 80's consecutively for quite some time and Zach Randolph spoke of playing with more energy and passion today and with a better team coming into town, I expect them to try to be an active dog today. There is no line out, but will be looking forward to it.
Twolves vs. Hornets
The Twolves gave up a huge lead to the Hawks as I remember catching the score of that game at the half as the Hawks were down big - even by more than 20 at points - only to come back and beat the Twolves who played very poorly in the second half. The Hornets beat this team on the road already this season and covered the spread and now they come home to play them with even a bigger spread hanging over them. The Hornets won by 18 on the road against this team but the Twolves will look to bounce-back after a very poor shooting performance in the second half and they have some time to think about their poor performance from their previous game. The Twolves have played in 4 straight unders and lost 6 straight but they surprsingly play better on the road as per it relates to their points scored. This team has put up in the mid 80's at home while in their last 4 road ballgames, they have put up 93 points in all 4 of them. This includes at Denver, NY, Lakers and at Sac. New Orleans is an under team having played 8 of 10 unders. I think the twovles play well in the first half here likely and I would not be surprised to see this game go over.
Magic vs. Blazers
The Magic and Van Gundy beat down the Heat - when the Heat were playing well - as he faced his old squad, not to mention it was an in-state rivalry and these 2 teams are not very fond of each other. The Magic hit the road and face a Blazer team that is still very young, and it shows with their record, but at home, this team is a different type of beast. The Blazers are 5-8, which is actually very decent compared to what this team was last year - and at home, this team is 5-1. The Rose Garden in Portland is a very tough place to play for opposing team as Portand has defeated the likes of Dallas, Detroit, New Orleans and Memphis. The Blazers are typically an under team going back to last year, they had played 3 straight overs before their last game against Sac where the game went well under. The Magic have been a covering machine this year as they are 12-3 ATS this year including covering 7 of their last 8. Portland is a solid team at home, but they occasionally go in their shooting lulls, so a lean on the Magic as I think the insdie game of Howard, Turk, Lewis and Nelson is as solid as it comes in the league.
NCAAB Southern Conference
Davidson vs. App. State
I like the ACC/SEC and Ivy League conferences, very much, but I also like the Southern Conference as well. I was on Elon a while back and there are some teams that I just have knowledge about given that I have been around Georgia Basketball for quite a while and many of these schools have come to the metro area to play. This includes Georgia Southern, Georgia State, the Bulldogs - having seen Elon, Gardner Webb, Kennesaw State and quite a few Atlantic Sun teams come play as well. Davidson is the same team if you remember that took the Tarheels down to the wire and this team is built on Southern Championships as from their coach, to their prestigious academic rigors, this is a very good school all around. This is a basketball school that loves to pride itself on championships and trips to the NCAA Tournament. Appalachian state both on the football field and on the basketball field recruits speed. This was evident when this team simply destroyed Michigan as this program believes speed kills. However, on the basketball court it is a bit different. Davidson has finally caught the attention of pollsters as this team sits atop the top 25 and in a lot of ways, this team has to thank Winthrop who helped put Davidson on the map as well as Mid tier schools can indeed play with the big boys is what the last couple of years have shown. Davidson is 2-2 with one of those losses to UNC and the other to western michigan. Davidson has yet to win a road game this year. App. State has lost no game by more than 4 points this year and at home, they have dominated in their only home game and on the road, they have been very impressive with strong leadership from Brand and Abraham. I wouldn't be suprised if App. State is very competitve in the first half before Davidson takes over in the 2nd half but the gym will be rocking for this game as this is a big game for the program.
