Re: Do you think LSU is the Best Team?

just stumbled in here after doing some work....love the playoff idea!

Only weird part is determining who plays who, but they can definitely squeeze 32 games (that's how many bowl games there are) into a playoff series. I would actually be more enthralled by the competition in a bowl series...sounds awesome!

As far as LSU goes...I don't think they were a spectacular team, but I can't say I can make a contention for any other teams either. I don't think OSU was a worthy #1...but that's a whole other story...but I don't think Hawaii ever stood a chance either (lossless season then embarassed against a real team). 2 losses in college football are not hard to come by regardless of which teams are playing (don't you think Michigan REALLY wishes they could go back to the Appalachian State game and play like they did against Florida?) LSU is an acceptable #1 to me, even though they rarely produced "fireworks", and tended to start games slowly. You'll see in (short) years to come, as lesser known teams become more competitive with innovative offenses, that a playoff will almost be mandatory!

Imagine watching the ncaabb tournament where George Mason's only chance was a single game!

A tournament is in the spirit of competition and, after watching this season, is absolutely necessary

Re: Do you think LSU is the Best Team?

I don't see what the big deal is. Every team knew what system was in place to determine the national champion before the season started. It's a season long tournament, and you can't have a bad week or it could come back to haunt you. As far as LSU jumping a bunch of other teams, it was legitimate. How could you have a team that didn't even win its conference championship go to the national championship (Georgia, Kansas)? I will admit that Georgia was playing great at the end of the season but they didn't take care of business all year long. Same with USC. I'm not going to debate the strength of the SEC compared to other conferences, everyone has their own opinion of that. Personally I think the SEC is the toughest conference in the nation, but that's my opinion. What I do think is unfair is for the SEC, Big 12 and Big East to have to go through their conference schedules and then have to play a conference championship game while the Pac 10 and Big 10 don't have a conference championship game. And I'm sure that this isn't the first year that there has been some disagreement over who the national champion should be, that's every year. What about Auburn a few years ago when they went undefeated? People should just realize that the system paired what it considered the two most worthy teams in the national championship, and LSU won the game, end of story.

I agree with you its not a big deal. This thread is created to show the controversey in college football, thats all.And there is plenty to go around. I remember Auburn a few years ago.But a few years before Auburn a team did go the the National Championship game that didn't win there conference. That team was Nebraska.

Re: Do you think LSU is the Best Team?

Saints,

I remember that, I was furious when Auburn was bypassed after going undefeated in the SEC. This is when the SEC was not considered the superior conference to the Big 10 or Big 12 for that fact. Oklahoma lost that game in their conference championship, was given a chance anyway to play in the title game and got destroyed. I firmly feel that if you go undefeated or even 1 loss in the SEC you need to be given a national title look. However, the big 10 has come a long way with Illinois and the Big 12 was huge this year as Missouri got the shaft as they should have been in a BCS bowl game, granted Kansas proved their worth as well.

This is a spirited and solid discussion.

Re: Do you think LSU is the Best Team?

There are a bunch of two loss teams that can claim they are deserving of a national title. After watching the BCS Championship game, LSU didn't show me that they are as great as the media proclaimed them to be. LSU had a lot of seniors compared to Ohio States younger starters. I thought well ahead of time that LSU would win that game simply on that stat alone especially as I think Ohio State overachieved this year - remember, it was supposed to be a rebuilding year for them. Anyway, I proved my own opinion correct as Ohio State shot themselves in the foot with stupid penalties that kept themselves from making it a better game. Penalties that I don't think experienced seniors make. I don't think the Buckeyes quarterback was all that great either and the offensive coordinator was predictable. Wells is a beast and they didn't run him. That's coaching. Talent wise, I think they matched up evenly. Being a home game doesn't hurt either, but that is the system and how it unfolded. So this season, LSU was technically the best team. I was hoping USC would slip in as they have just as talented a team as LSU, Ohio State, Georgia, etc. - but they have or had a good amount of senior starters. I really do think that matters in the college game. The crazy part is, with the BCS system the way it is, Ohio State may very well be right back in the title game if some of those juniors don't leave. I don't know if I really want to see them for a third year in a row in a title game, but none of us have any control over that as we are not the voters. I would welcome a playoff though.

I agree it is legit, but we just want a playoff. If your a tiger fan you say what a great year of college football and we are #1.But are you truly #1.There is the problem. tland22 I know you go to LSU,but lets say Georgia or Virginia Tech was picked instead of LSU,would you still have the same attitude.Would you say there is a true Champion. I can answer that for you - NO.I am not trying to pick on you but point out the flaws of the system. With a playoff you have very little flaws. The only problem you would have would be seeding. Then again most teams that would be in a playoff will have almost the same record because it would probably be the top 8 in BCS standings. The system isn't fair and it never will be until theres a playoff or if 1 team goes undefeated.IMO,I can't really say I feel that LSU is the true champ. We will never know if the other schools could have beat them. And its ashame for those kids that only 2 teams are picked for one game. The keyword is picked not earned.

Re: Do you think LSU is the Best Team?

Just stumbled onto this great threat after having some breathing room from the college hoop!
Like many of you, I agree until there is a play-off system in place we can't really tell which is the best team in the nation, unless it go undefeated the whole nine yard beating credible opponents convincingly.
So the short answer is 'no'.

A loss is a loss. LSU lost twice which were same as Georgia, Missouri, USC, W.V. leave alone Kansas 11-1 for that matter. Many of them were as dominant as LSU in their bowls game. Actually Geogia & USC demolished their opponent well in 1st quarter unlike LSU trailing until 2nd quarter!
Bottom line, cases can be argued forever which team is the best. But for now, my hat is off to LSU as #1 in system that in placed.

That's why they have the Superbowl to avoid all the nuisance,
C.

Re: Do you think LSU is the Best Team?

I think that LSU is the Best Team, and if there was one team in the Title game that should have not been there it was Ohio st. and that showed in the game. Georgia dosent deserve to be even talked about for the Title game, Even though they beat Hawaii who robbed someone like Missouri from a BCS game because they went 12-0 and didnt play anyone. Face it Georgia should have lost to Troy this year(If you watched that game you know what Im talking about). USC probably should have been there before Ohio st. and it would have been a better game. Im not an LSU fan, but l do think they are the best team.

Re: Do you think LSU is the Best Team?

IC:

I believe that LSU deserved the right to play in the National Championship game. My logic is pretty simple. LSU was the strongest team in the SEC and the SEC was the strongest conference in colege football this year. I don't believe that OSU was as good as their number one ranking and statistics would indicate at the end of the regular season. However, they had as strong of a case as anyone for their right to play for the National Championship game (I personally think that GA and WV were better teams than OSU).

I agree with a playoff system. I think that the first game of the playoffs should be the conference championship game (conferences w/o a championship game would not be eligible for the NC game). From there, the top 8 teams should move on to the playoffs. Round 1 could be played on the weekend around Christmas, round 2 New Years, and round 3 the weekend after New Years. I agree with lillefty, keep the other bowl games and incorporate them into the playoffs.

Re: Do you think LSU is the Best Team?

I say there will never be a playoff system b/c naccf is making way too much money out of these bowl games. That is the only reason they been keeping it for a while now. We have the same argument every year, like last year, did FL deserve to play for the national game, i think not. I think as long as their politic in the upper level of ncaaf and their main goal is about making money (not for the student), they will not change the system.

Also for the record i dont think LSU is the best team in the nation. I say it a toss up b/c there are so many teams who could have beaten lsu but never had the chance to play them.

Re: Do you think LSU is the Best Team?

the BIG 10 is so weak, the BCS should ban them from any title game for ATLEAST 4 years. And as far as the PAC 10 goes, they are pathetic as well...something needs to be set up where all of the SEC Teams play PAC 10 teams top to bottom and the entire nation would see how many games they'd win...im guessing 2 AT MOST! That conf is bogus b/c their inner conf play is total SH!T. They'd all have 3 losses playing in the BIG 12 or the SEC. Hell, USC had two losses in the PAC 10. Thats a JOOOKE!
