          • Nationals first to clinch, but more will follow soon
            September 11, 2017

The Washington Nationals became the first major league team to clinch a postseason spot when they wrapped up the NL East on Sunday.

They'll have plenty of company in the playoff picture soon enough.

The Nationals lead their division by 20 games, but three other teams have also turned their races into routs. The Cleveland Indians, winners of 18 straight , lead the AL Central by 13 games, and the Houston Astros are ahead by the same margin in the AL West.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have a nine-game lead in the NL West, and that's only after a 10-game losing streak quashed any chance they had of setting a major league record for victories.

Anticlimactic races are nothing new in the six-division era - in 1995, the Indians won the AL Central by a staggering 30 games - but it is somewhat unusual for so many first-place teams to have leads this comfortable. The last time four of the six divisions were decided by double digits was back in 2002, when the Braves, Twins, Cardinals and Yankees won by 19, 13 1/2, 13 and 10 1/2 games. This season could end up looking similar.

The gold standard for lopsided division races may have come in 1998. That year, five of the six divisions were decided by at least nine games, with the Yankees winning by 22 and the Braves by 18.

Cleveland and Houston enter this coming week with magic numbers of seven to clinch their divisions. The number is 11 for the Dodgers, barely down from 14 at the beginning of the month.

Some more developments from around baseball:

            CUTTING IT CLOSE

The one really close division race right now is in the NL Central, where the Chicago Cubs are two games ahead of both Milwaukee and St. Louis. With a talented, young nucleus returning from last year's World Series victory, the Cubs figured to be in charge of that division for a while, but it's been a struggle all season. Chicago has been good but not great, and even if the Cubs do make the postseason, they could finish with a worse record than both National League wild cards.

The Brewers have typified the all-or-nothing approach that seems prevalent throughout baseball these days. They have struck out more times than any team in the majors, but they're also second in the NL in homers. The quartet of Travis Shaw, Eric Thames, Domingo Santana and Keon Broxton has combined for 101 homers - only one fewer than Chicago's Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber and Javier Baez.

St. Louis dropped nine of its first 12 games back in April and was seven games out of first place on the morning of Sept. 3. The Cardinals have won seven of eight since then.

            HIGHLIGHTS

Fans in Washington and Toronto saw both ends of the defensive spectrum Friday night. Michael Taylor of the Nationals ended up with an inside-the-park grand slam when Philadelphia's Odubel Herrera misjudged his line drive to center field. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, were victimized by a gem of a play when Detroit's Jeimer Candelario backhanded a grounder and started a 5-4-3 triple play .

            LINE OF THE WEEK

J.D. Martinez of Arizona contributed to the Dodgers' slump by hitting four home runs Monday night. His last three homers came in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

An honorable mention goes to Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox, who hit for the cycle Saturday night.

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

              ...AND COUNTING

The Indians can win their 19th straight game when they open a series against Detroit. Cleveland is two victories shy of the 2002 ''Moneyball'' Athletics for the longest streak since 1935, and it can get within striking distance with a win as Carlos Carrasco (14-6, 3.53) takes on Tigers rookie Myles Jaye (1-0, 0.00). Throughout this franchise-record run, the Indians have maintained that it's not much of a discussion topic in the clubhouse. ''Maybe this thing gets more carried away with other people as opposed to us,'' manager Terry Francona said. ''We just play the game.''

              STILL STRUGGLING

The NL West-leading Dodgers are a loss away from their longest skid since moving to Los Angeles as they open a series at San Francisco. L.A. has dropped 10 straight for the first time since 1992, and that was the franchise's worst stretch since the Brooklyn Dodgers lost 16 consecutive in 1944. Kenta Maeda (12-6, 4.02 ERA) tries to play stopper against Giants rookie Chris Stratton (2-3, 4.10).

              HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Lucas Duda gets to be on the home team at Citi Field once again, this time when the Rays host the Yankees in Queens because of Hurricane Irma. Duda was traded from the Mets to Tampa Bay this season, and this will be his first trip back to his old home since the July deal. The Yankees are wrapping a ten-game road trip just a few miles from their Bronx stadium.

              9/11 ANNIVERSARY

Teams across the country will hold pregame ceremonies and moments of silence on the 16-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, and players, coaches and umpires will wear hats with an American flag patch. There was no scheduled home game for either New York team, although the Yankees will play against the Rays at the Mets' home in Citi Field due to Hurricane Irma.

              REST UP

The Nationals are off, a day after becoming the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff spot this season. Fresh from winning its fourth NL East crown in four years, Washington resumes Tuesday at home against Atlanta. Manager Dusty Baker already is trying to give his regulars rest down the stretch - Matt Wieters and Jayson Werth sat out both Saturday and Sunday, while Daniel Murphy, Ryan Zimmerman, Anthony Rendon and Michael A. Taylor all watched the Nats' last game over the weekend.

              HOME RUN RECORD APPROACHING

With 42 homers, batters increased their season total to 5,448, closing within 245 of the major league record of 5,693 homers set in 2000. At this rate, the record will be shattered with about two weeks left in the season.

CLEVELAND (AP) Unrelenting and unbeatable at the moment, the Cleveland Indians refuse to lose.

With their latest overpowering win, they extended baseball's longest winning streak since 2002 to 19 games with an 11-0 blowout of the Detroit Tigers on Monday night to move closer to a record that has stood for 101 years.

Francisco Lindor tripled home three runs off rookie Myles Jaye (0-1) in the second inning, and the Indians, who haven't lost since Aug. 23, added another blowout to their growing list of lopsided conquests.

The defending AL champions aren't just rolling, they're steamrolling opponents, outscoring them 132-32 during a stretch that includes six shutouts.

Carlos Carrasco (15-6) struck out nine in six innings, Lindor had four RBIs and Jose Ramirez hit a two-run homer as the Indians lowered their magic number to clinch the Central to six.

                  YANKEES 5, RAYS 1

NEW YORK (AP) - In the start of a series moved from Florida to Citi Field because of Hurricane Irma, Todd Frazier capitalized on Trevor Plouffe's two-out error with a three-run homer in a five-run fourth inning that led New York over Tampa Bay.

Jacoby Ellsbury broke Pete Rose's major league record by reaching base on catcher's interference for the 30th time, and David Robertson (8-2) pitched a career-high 2 2/3 innings in relief of CC Sabathia, removed with two on and one out in the fifth. Ellsbury was struck by Jake Odorizzi (8-8)

Opening a stretch that has 17 of their final 20 games in New York, the Yankees closed within three games of Boston in the AL East and opened a four-game lead over Minnesota for the top AL wild card. The Rays dropped four games behind the Twins with 17 remaining.

                  RANGERS 5, MARINERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Delino DeShields homered after taking a speedier trip around the bases for an earlier run as Texas beat Seattle in the opener of a four-game series matching teams still hoping to get an AL wild card.

Cole Hamels (10-3) struck out seven in six innings to win for the first time in his last four starts.

DeShields reached on a one-out bunt single in the second, when he was initially called out before a replay challenge overturned the call. DeShields then raced home from first on Shin-Soo Choo's two-run double that made it 4-1, running through a stop sign from fill-in third-base coach Jason Wood and scoring on a nifty headfirst slide.

Two innings later, DeShields hit his fifth homer.

Alex Claudio worked a perfect ninth to get his eighth save in 12 chances.

Mariners starter Ariel Miranda (8-7) allowed gave up six hits and walked three in only 1 2-3 innings.

                  BLUE JAYS 4, ORIOLES 3

TORONTO (AP) - Ryan Goins hit a solo home run, Marco Estrada won his third straight decision and Toronto beat slumping Baltimore.

Darwin Barney had two hits and an RBI as the Blue Jays won their third straight and handed the Orioles their fifth consecutive defeat.

Mark Trumbo hit a solo homer for Baltimore, which entered three games back in the AL wild-card race.

Estrada (8-8) allowed two runs and four hits in five innings. Dominic Leone pitched around a leadoff single in the ninth to earn his first career save.

Ubaldo Jimenez (5-10) is winless in six starts.

                  PIRATES 7, BREWERS 0

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Steven Brault and four relievers combined on a three-hitter to lift Pittsburgh over Milwaukee.

Milwaukee didn't get a runner past first base against the Pirates and fell 2+ games behind Chicago in the NL Central after outscoring the Cubs 20-3 in a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field over the weekend.

Brault (1-0), making his second start of the season, only allowed a fourth-inning walk to Ryan Braun and a fifth-inning leadoff single to Jesus Aguilar. He struck out six in six innings for his first major-league win.

Milwaukee rookie Brandon Woodruff (1-2), allowed six runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings.

                  WHITE SOX 11, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jose Abreu had four hits, Adam Engel hit a three-run homer and the White Sox pounded the Royals.

Abreu, who hit for the cycle Saturday and had two home runs Sunday, drove in two and scored once while raising his average to .306. He was a homer shy of another cycle.

Engel went deep off Brandon Maurer during a six-run sixth.

Yolmer Sanchez, Yoan Moncada and Abreu, the first three White Sox hitters, combined to go 9 for 16 with six runs and four RBIs. Moncada had his first career three-hit game.

Reynaldo Lopez (1-3) gave up three runs and eight hits in six-plus innings to pick up his first victory since Sept. 29, 2016.

Royals starter Jason Hammel (8-11) was pulled after giving up five runs in 3 1/3 innings.

                  ROCKIES 5, DIAMONDBACKS 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Nolan Arenado's tie-breaking three-run home run in the eighth inning powered the Rockies to a win over the Diamondbacks.

The Rockies took the first game of a key four-game series between the National League wild-card leader, Arizona, and second-place Colorado. The Rockies moved four games behind the Diamondbacks and 3 1/2 ahead of St. Louis for the second wild card slot.

Arenado drove in four runs with a double and his 33rd home run of the season, and the Rockies won their seventh straight road game and fifth overall.

Left-hander Tyler Anderson, activated from the 60-day disabled list on Sunday, pitched four scoreless innings in relief for the victory. Anderson (4-5) allowed a hit with four strikeouts.

The Rockies' winning rally started with two outs in the eighth. D.J. LeMahieu tripled over the top of an extreme defensive shift toward right field and Carlos Gonzalez walked against Diamondbacks reliever Jake Barrett (1-1).

                  • Dodgers In The Dumps
                    September 11, 2017

Right now, the easiest way to make money in baseball is by betting against the Los Angeles Dodgers. They’ve gone an absolutely hideous 1-15 SU in their last 16 games, beating the lowly Padres.

Despite the fact that the NL West is all but assured to the Dodgers, there are many more panicking that the league’s top ranked World Series contender is taking lumps like this so late in the season.

The sudden and alarming downturn in the fortunes of the Dodgers hasn’t curtailed their World Series odds because much of the playoff picture has remained the same. The fact is that the Cubs, Nationals and Dodgers will remain at the top of the heap because they’re doing so well in their divisions.

BEST WORLD SERIES ODDS per BETONLINE.AG
                    Los Angeles Dodgers +300
                    Cleveland Indians +450
                    Houston Astros +500
                    Washington Nationals +700
                    Chicago Cubs +800
                    Boston Red Sox +800

The only real race in the National League is in the NL Central with Milwaukee and St. Louis trying their damndest to stay relevant behind the Cubs. The Brewers certainly did themselves plenty of favors, winning a three-game sweep over Chicago this past weekend, but the Cubs will most certainly level that out with a series against the Mets this week.

Making the playoffs and fixing their late season woes is probably not a big deal to the Dodgers, but don’t tell that to third baseman Justin Turner. "Regardless of what the record says, right now we're the worst team in baseball,” said Turner. "What we did three months ago doesn't mean a whole lot right now. No one in this league is going to feel sorry for us. No one in this league is going to show up and be like, 'Oh, poor Dodgers.'"

Nobody’s going to feel sorry for the Dodgers because they’re one of the most unlikable franchises in baseball since they spend the gross national product of Nicaragua on their roster.

Los Angeles has two series remaining against the San Francisco Giants, who have nothing to play for aside from ruining the lives of their division rivals. The Dodgers also run head first in to a road circuit against Washington, and have series against the Phillies, Padres and Rockies to cap off the season.

The one thing we know for certain is that the Dodgers aren’t a safe regular season play as we head towards October. They’re overpriced at BetOnline.ag to begin with in terms of the moneyline, and until they right the ship there’s no reason to invest in them further as a short term or long term wager.

They’re too good to be this bad for much longer, but the Astros and Indians are becoming much headier plays in the sportsbook as the Dodgers retain massive public appeal due to their record-setting season.

                              • Dodgers and Giants resume top of first inning at 10:50 p.m.
                                September 12, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers and Giants resumed their series opener at 10:50 p.m. Monday at AT&T Park after two separate delays for lightning and rain.

The first pitch Monday night was delayed 42 minutes because of a lightning storm that spectacularly lit up the sky beginning about an hour before the scheduled start time. The tarps were pulled amid sporadic showers, and rain continued to fall during a moment of silence in memory of Sept. 11. The game resumed at 7:57 p.m. but was put back in a delay after one out. The second delay lasted 2 hours, 52 minutes.

The NL West-leading Dodgers are trying to end a 10-game losing streak, tied for the franchise's worst since moving to Los Angeles.

The game resumed with Ty Blach taking over for Giants starter Chris Stratton. Kenta Maeda made his start for Los Angeles.

Rain, rallies, 11th straight loss for LA; game ends 2:10 am
                                September 12, 2017

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The Dodgers rallied once, twice and then a third time. Manager Dave Roberts thought his club would snap out of its long losing streak at last.

The National League-leading Dodgers lost their 11th straight game for the longest skid since the club moved to Los Angeles, finishing their 8-6 defeat to the San Francisco Giants at 2:10 a.m. local time Tuesday morning after a pair of rain and lightning delays late Monday.

''It's disappointing because our guys played hard tonight, they really did,'' Roberts said. ''I thought that we were going to win that game. I thought we put ourselves in a position to win but we couldn't hold the lead.''

Hunter Pence hit a go-ahead single in the sixth for San Francisco against Pedro Baez (3-5).

Following a 42-minute delay ahead of first pitch, Curtis Granderson struck out against Chris Stratton, then the game immediately entered an even longer delay - this time for 2 hours, 52 minutes, before resuming at 10:50 p.m. local time.

The total delay time of 3:34 was more than the game time of 3:22. Roberts said his preference would have been a doubleheader but he understood it as a league decision, saying ''it was out of our hands.''

''This is obviously very uncharacteristic to start a game this late,'' he said.

Los Angeles, which has lost 16 of 17 overall, had its lead atop the NL over idle Washington trimmed to 3 1/2 games. The Dodgers travel to play the Nationals next.

The skid topped a pair of 10-game losing streaks in L.A. from 1961 and `92. The 1944 Brooklyn team lost 16 straight games. L.A. held a season-best 21-game division lead for four days and as recently as Aug. 25, but that has dwindled to nine games over Arizona.

''It's disappointing every time you lose,'' shortstop Corey Seager said. ''I thought tonight was better. We came back, got back in the game a couple times. Unfortunately we didn't win. Just got to get back to winning, that's about it. Nothing else about that.''

An announcement came on the scoreboard during a fourth-inning pitching change: The final BART trains would leave downtown locations at 12:20 a.m. ''God Bless America'' during the seventh-inning stretch came at 1:25 a.m.

And one devoted - or call it crazy - kayaker stayed out in the cove in his craft trying to retrieve baseballs into the wee hours. A hardy group of loyal fans stayed until the final out.

''In my mind I didn't think we were going to be playing tonight, once it started to get around 9:45,'' Giants center fielder Denard Span said. ''... Then we came out here and tried to battle our butts off.''

Ty Law (4-1) pitched the sixth for the win.

Yasiel Puig homered in the fifth and Los Angeles came back from down 4-0 but couldn't hold it.

Span splashed a two-run homer into McCovey Cove in the bottom of the first inning against Kenta Maeda. Span batted third for just the fourth time in his career and first this year as manager Bruce Bochy shook up his lineup after San Francisco was outscored 21-2 the past two games at the White Sox. It was his fifth career home run into McCovey Cove beyond the right-field wall.

Jarrett Parker homered leading off the second for San Francisco.

Once the game resumed, Ty Blach was on the mound and Stratton's day was done - the shortest start of his career.

Sam Dyson, San Francisco's seventh reliever, pitched the ninth for his 13th save.

                                VOGELSONG RETIRING

Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong will retire as a Giant on Sunday, when he will take the AT&T Park mound once more as San Francisco honors him.

The 40-year-old Vogelsong was drafted by the Giants in the fifth round of the 1998 amateur draft and made his major league debut in their waterfront ballpark on Sept. 2, 2000, finishing his 12-year career 61-75 with a 4.81 ERA while pitching two stints each for San Francisco and Pittsburgh.

''He's done some great things for us, for the Giants,'' Bochy said. ''We're trying to do something special for him.''

                                TRAINER'S ROOM

Dodgers: With Hyun-Jin Ryu being skipped in the rotation during the San Francisco series for extra rest, he was set to throw a simulated game of four or five innings Tuesday.

Giants: 1B Brandon Belt is unlikely to play again this season because of a concussion and is still unable to do baseball activities. ''I would be surprised at this point,'' Bochy said.

LHP Clayton Kershaw (16-3, 2.15 ERA) makes his third start for the Dodgers since coming off the disabled list with a lower back strain, having gone 20-9 with a 1.62 ERA in in 39 career games and 38 starts against San Francisco. Kershaw lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his last start against Colorado on Sept. 7. RHP Johnny Cueto (7-7, 4.43) also makes his third start since coming off the DL.
