  • The Latest: Roberts hears Lasorda's message loud and clear
    November 1, 2017

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Latest on Game 7 of the World Series between the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers (all times local):

    8:57 p.m.

George Springer and the Houston Astros rocketed to the top of the baseball galaxy Wednesday night, winning the first World Series championship in franchise history by romping past the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in Game 7.

Playing for a city still recovering from Hurricane Harvey, and wearing an H Strong logo on their jerseys, the Astros brought home the prize that had eluded them since they started out in 1962 as the Colt .45s.

Springer led off the evening with a double against Yu Darvish, and soon it was 2-0. Springer hit his fifth homer - tying the mark set by Reggie Jackson and matched by Chase Utley - when he connected for a record fourth game in a row, making it 5-0 in the second inning.

Astros manager A.J. Hinch pulled starter Lance McCullers in the third soon after the curveballer crazily plunked his fourth batter of the game. Winner Charlie Morton pitched the final four innings.

    ---

    8:45 p.m.

The Houston Astros are three outs away from their first World Series title.

Game 7 has been fairly quiet in the late innings, with both teams' pitching staffs finding much less trouble than their starters. The Dodgers mounted rallies in the fifth and sixth innings, but got only one run.

Game 4 starter Charlie Morton cruised through the Dodgers' lineup in the seventh and eighth innings. Joc Pederson struck out leading off the eighth before Logan Forsythe and Austin Barnes were retired on fly balls.

Houston has only two singles since George Springer's two-run homer in the second inning, but the Astros are in command of Game 7.

    ---

    8:30 p.m.

Closer Kenley Jansen was called on to face the top of the Astros' order in the seventh with the Dodgers trailing 5-1.

George Springer flied out and Alex Bregman struck out before Jose Altuve walked and stole second. Jansen retired Carlos Correa on a popout to shortstop.

The Dodgers again failed to muster any hits in the bottom of the inning. Against Charlie Morton, Justin Turner popped out to first, Cody Bellinger struck out for the third time, and Yasiel Puig grounded out to short.

    ---

    8:07 p.m.

The Dodgers finally got a run in the sixth, closing to 5-1 on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Andre Ethier off Charlie Morton.

Joc Pederson singled leading off and Logan Forsythe walked. Austin Barnes popped out, dropping Los Angeles to 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Ethier batted for Clayton Kershaw, who allowed two hits in four scoreless innings, and singled to right. But Chris Taylor struck out and Corey Seager hit a broken-bat groundout as Morton avoided the bat, leaving the Dodgers 1 for 13 RISP with 10 left on base.

Kershaw allowed a leadoff single to Carlos Correa in the top half and, after a pair of intentional walks later in the inning, retired pinch-hitter Cameron Maybin on an inning-ending foulout.

    ---

    7:38 p.m.

The Houston Astros have escaped another jam and kept their 5-0 lead intact as they close in on a Game 7 victory in the World Series.

Brad Peacock retired six straight Dodgers in relief before issuing a one-out walk to Corey Seager in the fifth. Justin Turner then chased Peacock with a single, but Francisco Liriano got a grounder from Cody Bellinger before Chris Devenski got Yasiel Puig to line out.

The Dodgers have stranded eight runners through five innings. The Astros have stranded only one.

The Astros have only one hit since George Springer's second-inning homer, but runs aren't what they need.

Clayton Kershaw has pitched three innings of one-hit relief for the Dodgers after Yu Darvish flopped in his second straight World Series start. Kershaw, working on two days' rest after struggling in Game 5, has struck out four Astros in the decider.

    ---

    7:10 p.m.

Clayton Kershaw has tossed two scoreless innings, but the Dodgers still trail the Astros 5-0 through four innings of the World Series.

Kershaw gave up a one-out single to Marwin Gonzalez and had a wild pitch before retiring the next two batters.

The Dodgers' offense couldn't get anything going against Brad Peacock in the bottom of the inning.

He retired the side, getting Logan Forsythe on a groundout to third, Austin Barnes on a pop up to third and Kershaw on a six-pitch swinging strikeout.

    ---

    6:54 p.m.

Lance McCullers Jr. was chased in the third inning, making this the first Game 7 in which neither starting pitcher got three outs.

Clayton Kershaw relieved to start the inning and retired the side in order, three days after he failed to hold a 4-0 lead in Game 5.

McCullers allowed Corey Seager's leadoff single in the third and hit Justin Turner on a shoulder blade - McCullers' Series record fourth hit batter of the game.

He struck out Cody Bellinger for the second time, and Brad Peacock came in and retired Yasiel Puig on a flyout and struck out Joc Pederson.

Los Angeles put on three runners in the first and two each in the second and third, but went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and stranded six.

    ---

    6:24 p.m.

The Houston Astros are off to a stellar start in Game 7 of the World Series after chasing Dodgers starter Yu Darvish.

Houston took a 5-0 lead in the second inning with three more runs off Darvish, capped by George Springer's two-run homer. Lance McCullers Jr. also drove in a run with a groundout for the Astros, who are attempting to win their first championship in franchise history.

Springer homered in his fourth consecutive World Series game, becoming the first player in big-league history to accomplish the feat in a single postseason.

In the biggest start of his career, Darvish lasted only five outs - just as he did in Game 3. The Japanese right-hander is headed into unrestricted free agency after the worst World Series by a starting pitcher since 1960, when Art Ditmar lasted got just one out in each of his two starts for the Yankees against Pittsburgh.

The Dodgers got two more runners on in the second against McCullers, but Chris Taylor lined out and Logan Forsythe was doubled up.

    ---

    5:52 p.m.

Houston went ahead against Game 3 loser Yu Darvish after four pitches and took a 2-0 lead after eight.

George Springer lined a flat slider just inside the left-field foul line for a leadoff double, tying Willie Stargell's record of seven extra-base hits in a World Series, set in 1979.

Alex Bregman hit a grounder that first baseman Cody Bellinger gloved in front of second baseman Logan Forsythe. Needing to make an off-balance throw, Bellinger threw behind Darvish at first base, and the ball bounced into the Astros dugout as Springer scored.

Bregman wound up at second on the error, advanced to third on Houston's second stolen base of the Series and came home on Jose Altuve's grounder to first.

Yuli Gurriel was booed loudly again by Dodgers fans after his racist gesture at Darvish in Game 3, which led to a five-game suspension at the start of next season. Like Rich Hill the night before, Darvish stepped off the mound before Gurriel's opening plate appearance, allowing extra time for jeers. Gurriel hit an inning-ending flyout in a 13-pitch at-bat that raised Darvish's pitch count to 24.

Chris Taylor doubled against Lance McCullers Jr. on a hop to the right-center wall leading off the bottom half and reached safely in all seven games. Corey Seager struck out, Justin Springer was hit by a pitch, Cody Bellinger struck out and Yasiel Puig was hit by a pitch, loading the bases.

Joc Pederson fell behind 0-2 in the count and grounded to second on McCullers' 25th pitch.

    ---

    5:17 p.m.

The Dodgers turned to pitching legends Don Newcombe and Sandy Koufax for ceremonial first pitches before Game 7.

The right-handed Newcombe tossed the ball to Rick Monday, while lefty Koufax threw to Steve Garvey.

The 91-year-old Newcombe hung onto the 81-year-old Koufax's arm as they walked onto the field. They stood midway between the mound and home plate to make their throws.

Newcombe was a member of the franchise's 1955 World Series championship team. Koufax was World Series MVP in 1963 and 1965.

Before the game, Newcombe was sitting in his usual seat near the Dodgers dugout and entertained a steady stream of well-wishers. Hall of Famer Dave Winfield stopped by, along with current Dodgers Kenley Jansen and Andre Ethier and actor Ken Jeong.

    ---

    5 p.m.

Fernando Valenzuela is celebrating his 57th birthday at Dodger Stadium.

He was National League Rookie of the Year in 1981, when the Dodgers won the World Series and he earned a Game 3 victory.

Now a broadcaster for the team, Valenzuela had a 173-153 record and a 3.54 ERA in 17 seasons with the team.

Fellow Dodgers broadcaster Pepe Yniguez sang ''Happy Birthday'' as Valenzuela made his way through the crowded press box before the game. He also received birthday greetings in Spanish and Japanese.

    ---

    4:55 p.m.

Yasiel Puig got fired up for Game 7 by blasting ''Eye of the Tiger'' from ''Rocky III'' during his ride to Dodger Stadium.

In a video posted to his Twitter feed, the Cuban outfielder sat in the front passenger seat yelling, sticking out his tongue and thrashing his head as the opening notes of ''Eye of the Tiger'' blared inside the SUV.

    ---

    4:15 p.m.

Stadium organist Dieter Ruehle crafts a set list for his pre-game playing and it was a tip of the cap to the home team.

During the Astros' batting practice, Ruehle played the Japanese folk song, ''Sukiyaki,'' in honor of Dodgers starting pitcher Yu Darvish at the suggestion of Japanese media members.

With the home team just one win away from their first World Series title since 1988, Ruehle played U2's ''One'' and ''One Is the Loneliest Number'' by Three Dog Night.

The Dodgers took batting practice to recorded music selected by DJ Severe.

    ---

    2:19 p.m.

The Los Angeles Dodgers' 3-1 win in World Series Game 6 drew an average of 23 million viewers on the three Fox outlets, down 4 percent from the 24 million for the Chicago Cubs' 9-3 win over Cleveland that forced Game 7 last year.

Fox said Tuesday night's game averaged 22,229,000 on the main Fox network, 535,000 on Fox Deportes and 244,500 who streamed digitally on Fox Sports Go. Last year's Game 6 averaged 23.4 million on Fox, 425,000 on Fox Deportes and 151,000 on Fox Sports Go.

This was the second-most-watched Game 6 since the New York Yankees' Series-ending 7-3 win over Philadelphia in 2009.

    ---

    1:55 p.m.

Hall of Fame manager Tom Lasorda delivered a message loud and clear to current Dodgers manager Dave Roberts after the team forced a decisive Game 7 in the World Series.

The 90-year-old who managed the Dodgers to their last Series title in 1988 told Roberts: ''You haven't won (expletive) unless you win tomorrow.''

Roberts smiled when asked his reaction to Lasorda's bluntness.

''I've heard it all year, and I think that it's great,'' Roberts said Wednesday before Game 7. ''It's Tommy's words of encouragement. And yeah, I think for us, we want a championship and we're not done yet.''

    ---

    1:44 p.m.

The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers are keeping their lineups intact for the deciding Game 7 of the World Series.

Center fielder George Springer leads off Wednesday night for the Astros, followed by third baseman Alex Bregman, second baseman Jose Altuve, shortstop Carlos Correa, first baseman Yuli Gurriel, catcher Brian McCann, left fielder Marwin Gonzalez and right fielder Josh Reddick. Right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. starts.

Center fielder Chris Taylor tops the Dodgers' lineup. He's followed by shortstop Corey Seager, third baseman Justin Turner, first baseman Cody Bellinger, right fielder Yasiel Puig, left fielder Joc Pederson, second baseman Logan Forsythe and catcher Austin Barnes. Right-hander Yu Darvish is on the mound.

The Dodgers won 3-1 on Tuesday night to tie it up 3-all and force the first World Series Game 7 in Dodger Stadium history.

    • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win next week’s Masters:

      10-1: Woods, Johnson, Thomas, McIlroy

      12-1: Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose

      14-1: Bubba Watson

      16-1: Jason Day, Phil Mickelson

      18-1: Rickie Fowler, Jon Rahm

      25-1: Sergio Garcia, Paul Casey

      **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: 13 of my favorite sports movies…….

I do this list once a year or so; feel free to make your own list.

      13) Major League— Still maintain that Bob Uecker should’ve won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Harry Doyle, the Indians’ radio announcer. To this day, when a pitcher throws a really terrible pitch to the backstop, chances are the TV guy will say “….juuuust a biiiit outside…” like Harry Doyle did when Wild Thing Vaughn was on the mound.

      12) He Got Game— The only Spike Lee movie I’ve ever seen; its a good one, with Denzel Washington getting released from prison by warden Ned Beatty, on one condition— that he can get his son (Ray Allen) to play basketball at the warden’s alma mater, Big State.

Anyone who was surprised by Louisville’s problems last year didn’t see this movie.

      11) Rocky— If only they hadn’t made all those awful sequels. Rocky is a classic; a fighter down on his luck gets a once-in-a-lifetime shot to fight for the heavyweight title back when boxing was a big thing. If you’re at a game in Philly now and they cue up the Rocky music, people still get fired up— its pretty cool.

      10) Hoosiers— I’ve had this argument with a friend of mine for years, that Norman Dale was a horrible coach saved only by Jimmy Chitwood not missing a shot in the whole damn movie. Hickory High finished the first game he coached with four guys on the court; even his assistant coach, who wound up in alcohol rehab, knew enough to always give Jimmy the ball when it mattered. They did nail the scene at the end when Hickory wins the state title.

      9) Any Given Sunday— Lawrence Taylor and Jim Brown as actors? Yes!!! Al Pacino coaches his Miami Sharks against four teams, all coached by NFL Hall of Famers.

      8) Moneyball— The good guys lose in the end, but not before they win 20 games in a row and surprisingly make the playoffs. I won’t embarrass myself by telling you how many times I’ve seen this movie, but if you guess, chances are your guess is too low.

      7) Bull Durham— Pitching coach Robert Wuhl delivered this inspirational piece of advice on a visit to the mound:

“……candlesticks always make a nice gift, and uh, maybe you could find out where she’s registered and maybe a place-setting or maybe a silverware pattern. Okay, let’s get two!”

      6) Friday Night Lights— Of all the sports movies, Billy Bob Thornton does the best job of portraying a coach, in this case a west Texas high school football coach who gets his best player KO’d for the season by leaving him in a blowout too long. The townspeople aren’t pleased.

      5) Blue Chips— Nick Nolte did his research for this by hanging out with Bob Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers for a year, so the thrown chairs and punted balls make more sense. Jerry Tarkanian’s cameo and Bob Cousy’s portrayal of the school’s AD are the underrated parts of this movie.

      4) Invincible— True story about Vince Papale, who was a 30-year old bartender that tried out for and wound up playing special teams for the Eagles for three years in the 70’s. Mark Wahlberg plays Papale; Greg Kinnear plays Dick Vermeil.

      3) Fast Break— Gabe Kaplan’s character quits his job in a New York City deli to become the basketball coach at a small Nevada college. The team he puts together is interesting- Bernard King and Michael Warren are two of the players.

      2) One on One— Robby Benson plays a flashy small school point guard who gets recruited by a big time college program, but once he gets on campus, the coach thinks he made a mistake and tries to run him off the team.

1— For Love of the Game— Kevin Costner pitches for the Tigers, but is at the end of his career. JK Simmons is his manager; John C O’Reilly his catcher, Kelly Preston his girlfriend. Vin Scully is in effect the narrator of the movie.

            • MLB Daily Line Drive: Opening Day's picks, betting odds and analysis

Thanks for coming back for another year of Line Drive as we work hard to bring you winning baseball picks, the best daily analysis on all the day's games as well as tips on weather, umpires, and other betting trends to help you with your MLB handicapping. Play ball!

              Double-play Picks

St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets (-140, 6.5)

The Mets entered the 2017 season as a World Series contender and well, they fell off the rails in spectacular fashion, becoming one of the most disappointing teams in baseball last year. The Mets also cost bettors more than almost any team in baseball at -30.04 units and ended up winning just 70 games.

This was due mostly to the fact New York was riddled with injuries last season, especially to its pitching staff. In fact, Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Zack Wheeler, Steven Matz and Matt Harvey all spent time on the disabled list. The Mets are hoping 2018 will be different, starting with the God of Thunder himself.

Thor (Syndergaard) gets the Opening Day start for the Mets after missing the majority of 2017 with a lat injury. But the fireball-hurling right-hander looks healthy and ready to put last season behind him. Syndergaard was his old self this spring, pitching to a 1.35 ERA while racking up 23 punchouts in 20 innings pitched.

He faces a revamped Cardinals team and while he’s 0-2 against the Red Birds, he has done well in this matchup. In two career starts against St. Louis, Syndergaard has a 2.77 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP, while striking out 14 in 13 innings.

When Syndergaard is at full strength, he may have the best pure stuff in the bigs and he’ll want to start 2018 off with a Thunderous bang!

              Pick: Mets -140

Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks (-110, 8.5)

It’s a rematch of last season’s epic National League Wild Card showdown as the Rockies open their season in the desert against the D-backs.

While it was the Diamondbacks who outlasted the Rockies 11-8 in the NL’s one-game playoff to advance to the NLDS, it looks like the Rockies are the team trying to take the next step. The Rockies lineup remains stacked with the likes of Nolan Arenado, Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez and, while the starting staff leaves a little to be desired, they added some high-powered arms to the bullpen, including Wade Davis and Bryan Shaw.

Arizona was one of the best home teams in baseball last season, but the loss of J.D. Martinez can't be understated - he was an absolute monster last season. The lineup should regress in 2018 and to make matters worse, Zach Greinke and Robbie Ray are staring the season on the DL. That leaves a matchup of Jon Gray against Patrick Corbin, which is basically a wash.

Look for the Rockies' bats to have the edge here, plus they’ll be seeking a bit of revenge for last season.

              Pick: Rockies -110

              Last season: 161-146-15 (52.4 %)

              Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

              Streaking: Clayton Kershaw (2017: 18-4, 2.31 ERA, $1,235)

What better way to start our streaking pitcher section than with the best pitcher in baseball. As you can see by the numbers above, Kershaw dominated once again in 2017 and despite the high price attached to every start he makes, it was a good idea to back him as he was the second-most profitable pitcher last year.

Kershaw and the Dodgers host the San Francisco Giants for their opening weekend series and while the Giants are one of the Dodgers' biggest rivals, Kershaw has dominated this matchup. He's 22-9 with a 1.60 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP, while striking out 307 batters in 297 and 1-3 innings pitched against San Francisco. Los Angeles is a huge -300 favorite in this matchup for a reason.

              Slumping: Chris Archer (2017: 10-12, 4.07 ERA, $-577)

It was another down year for Archer in 2017 (as Rays prospect Brent Honeywell isn't afraid to tell him). He had more losses then wins and an ERA over 4.00 for the second consecutive season. No Opening Day starter (not including the Tigers' Jordan Zimmermann as their game was postponed) cost bettors more money than Archer did in 2017. His reward: an Opening Day nod in a matchup with the Chris Sale and the Red Sox. Wait, what?

Boston has owned the Rays right-hander over the course of his career. Archer is just 2-12 with a 5.45 ERA, a 1.69 WHIP in 19 career start against the Red Sox and during this two-year slump he is 1-6 with a 5.87 ERA and a 1.77 WHIP. Woof! The Rays are currently +145 home dogs for this matchup.

              Weather Watch

Bad weather always makes its presence felt in early season baseball and 2018 is no different. Two Opening Day games - Washington at Cincinnati and Pittsburgh at Detroit - have already been postponed due to rain. Luckily, several teams will make use of their retractable rooves and/or dome stadiums.

That said, there are a couple of pitcher's winds to take note of today. At SunTrust Park in Atlanta, where the Braves will host the Phillies, there's a 14-mph wind blowing in from center field in the forecast. The total is currently at eight runs. While in Kansas City, there will be an 11-mph wind, also gusting in from center at Kauffman Stadium for the Royals game against the White Sox. The total for that game is currently 8.5 runs. Make sure to always check out our MLB Weather page before making your baseball bets.

                • Stanton homers twice in debut, Yankees beat Blue Jays 6-1
                  March 29, 2018

TORONTO (AP) Giancarlo Stanton homered twice, doubled and had four RBIs in his New York Yankees debut, a 6-1 win Thursday over the Toronto Blue Jays that gave Aaron Boone in a win in his first game as a professional manager.

Luis Severino (1-0) pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the Yankees, who won their opener for the first time since 2011.

Acquired from Miami after leading the majors with 59 homers, Stanton hit a two-run homer in the first off J.A. Happ (0-1), an RBI double in the fifth and hit a solo homer in the ninth off Tyler Clippard.

                  WHITE SOX 14, ROYALS 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Matt Davidson became the fourth player in major league history to homer three times on opening day, Tim Anderson homered twice and Jose Abreu went deep for the White Sox.

James Shields (1-0) surrendered four runs in the first inning but wound up lasting six innings, holding his former team without a hit after that shaky first.

Davidson became the fourth player with a three-homer performance on opening day, joining Detroit's Dmitri Young (2005), the Cubs' Tuffy Rhodes (1994) and Toronto's George Bell (1988). Chicago's matched the record for home runs on opening day, set by the New York Mets in 1988.

Danny Duffy (0-1) was followed by eight relievers.

                  CUBS 8, MARLINS 4

MIAMI (AP) - Ian Happ became the second player to homer on the first pitch of the major league season, and Anthony Rizzo made his emotional homecoming even more memorable with a home run.

Rizzo homered into the upper deck in the second inning - an unscripted tribute to the victims of last month's shooting at his former high school in Parkland, Florida. As he crossed home plate, Rizzo patted his chest and pointed to the sky.

Happ pulled the first pitch from Jose Urena (0-1) into the seats. Dwight Evans is the only other player to connect on the first pitch of a season, doing it for the Red Sox in 1986 off Jack Morris at Tiger Stadium, the Elias Sports Bureau said.

Steve Cishek (1-0) stranded four runners in two scoreless innings.

                  ATHLETICS 6, ANGELS 5, 11 INNINGS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Marcus Semien singled into an empty center field with one out in the 11th inning, beating Los Angeles' five-man infield.

Shohei Ohtani connected on the first pitch he saw for a single in a much-hyped major league debut for the Japanese two-way star. Batting eighth as designated hitter, Ohtani swung at the first pitch and grounded a hard single to right field off Kendall Graveman in the second inning. He grounded out his next three times up before a strikeout in the 11th.

Boog Powell hit a one-out triple off Noe Ramirez (0-1) to start the winning rally. Matt Joyce was intentionally walked to bring up Semien, who delivered his first career game-ending RBI.

Chris Hatcher (1-0) got the win.

                  MARINERS 2, INDIANS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Felix Hernandez pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning and Nelson Cruz hit a two-run home run in the first inning.

Hernandez became just the seventh pitcher to start at least 10 straight opening days, and he got off to a strong start against one of the best teams in the American League. Hernandez allowed two hits in 5 1/3 innings, only being pulled due to a limited pitch count after being hit by a line drive during spring training and missing some time.

Hernandez (1-0) was given an early jolt from Cruz, who picked up where 2017 left off. After hitting 39 home runs last year, Cruz hit the first pitch he saw from Corey Kluber (0-1) over the center field fence for an early 2-0 lead. The 88 mph cutter stayed in the middle of the plate, and Cruz didn't miss.

Kluber pitched eight innings and allowed six hits.

                  GIANTS 1, DODGERS 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Joe Panik homered off Clayton Kershaw in the fifth inning, and San Francisco dealt the three-time NL Cy Young Award winner his first loss in his franchise-record eighth consecutive opening day start.

It was the first run allowed this year by Kershaw (0-1), including spring training. The seven hits given up by the left-hander are the most off him on opening day, when he is 5-1.

Andrew McCutchen, acquired from Pittsburgh during the offseason, was 1 for 4 with a double in his Giants debut. Evan Longoria, obtained by San Francisco from Tampa Bay, was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.

Ty Blach (1-0) pitched three-hit ball over five innings, and Hunter Strickland closed out the ninth for his first save.

                  ASTROS 4, RANGERS 1

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - World Series MVP George Springer hit a leadoff homer in the opener for the second year in a row and Justin Verlander (1-0) pitched six scoreless innings as Houston started its championship defense.

Springer hit a 2-0 pitch off Cole Hamels (0-1), becoming the only player in MLB history with leadoff homers in consecutive season openers, according to Elias. Jake Marisnick also homered for the Astros.

Verlander is 6-0 with a 0.90 ERA in six regular-season starts since he was acquired from Detroit.

                  METS 9, CARDINALS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Yoenis Cespedes drove in three runs and newcomer Adrian Gonzalez hit a go-ahead double.

Noah Syndergaard (1-0) struck out 10 and walked none in six innings after missing most of last season with a torn lat muscle. Leadoff man Brandon Nimmo, subbing for injured All-Star Michael Conforto, reached safely four times and scored twice as the Mets chased a furious Carlos Martinez (0-1) in the fifth inning to make Mickey Callaway a winner in his first game as a manager.

                  RAYS 6, RED SOX 4

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Denard Span made a huge splash in his debut for his hometown team on opening day, lining a bases-loaded triple to highlight a six-run rally in the eighth that sent Alex Cora to a loss in his first game as a major league manager.

Span's triple was only Tampa Bay's third hit of the day and gave the Rays a 5-4 lead. Adeiny Hechavarria followed with an infield single off Carson Smith (0-1), providing a two-run cushion for closer Alex Colome to earn a save.

Chris Sale allowed one hit and struck out nine in six scoreless innings. Boston built a 4-0 lead against Chris Archer, with Eduardo Nunez hitting a two-run, inside-the-park homer

                  ORIOLES 3, TWINS 2, 11 INNINGS

BALTIMORE (AP) - Adam Jones homered on the first pitch from Fernando Rodney (0-1) starting the bottom of the 11th inning, and Baltimore won its eighth straight opener.

Richard Bleier (1-0) worked one inning for the Orioles, who made the most of five hits.

Minnesota has lost nine of its last 10 openers, including three against Baltimore.

                  BREWERS 2, PADRES 1, 12 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Orlando Arcia singled in Ji-Man Choi with two outs in the 12th off Adam Cimber (0-1), who was making his big league debut.

Jeremy Jeffress (1-0) pitched two innings for the win. Jacob Barnes struck out the side in the 12th for the save.

Eric Hosmer, signed to a $144 million, eight-year contract early in spring training, went 0 for 4 with a walk and two strikeouts in his Padres debut.

                  BRAVES 8, PHILLIES 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer off Hector Neris (0-1) with two outs in the ninth inning, capping a comeback from a 5-0 deficit as Philadelphia lost in Gabe Kapler's first game as a big league manager.

Freddie Freeman and Ozzie Albies also homered for Atlanta, which won with a walk-off hit on opening day for the first time since 1998.

Arodys Vizcaino (1-0) struck out the side in the ninth.

Friday’s List of 13: Wrapping up Opening Day and other stuff
                      13) I used to be a minor league official scorer, long time ago (back when I had hair); if I kept score of games today, I’d code the field 3-9 instead of players, to account for shifting in the field.

For instance, Houston used four OF’s vs Joey Gallo Thursday; he flied out to 3B Alex Bregman, who was playing in left field. Traditional scoring would say F5, since Bregman plays 3B, but I’d say F7, since Gallo hit the ball to left field.

I’d supplement my scorebook with written notes on who actually caught the ball, but thats how I’d score a game now. Just think it would be more accurate.

                      12) Rays 6, Red Sox 4— Chris Sale allowed no runs, one hit in six IP (92 PT), then the Boston bullpen blew the lead in the 8th inning, allowing four walks, two hits, with Denard Span’s 3-run triple the big hit.

                      11) Dodger TV guy Joe Davis said there were 90 mound visits (90!!!) in Game 7 of the World Series last year. the limit this year will be six per team; ummm, thats a little different.

                      10) Cubs 8, Marlins 4- Roof was open at Marlins’ Park Thursday; it was open for six home games out of 78 LY and Miami was 0-6 in those games. Marlins are not a MLB-quality team right now- they’re going to lose a lot of games.

For the record, Ian Happ was the first batter this season and he hit a home run.

                      9) If you care about such things, Josh Donaldson led MLB last year, 15 1st-inning homers. Giancarlo Stanton was next, with 14. Stanton hit one in the first inning in Toronto Thursday, and then he hit another one in the 9th inning.

                      8) Astros 4, Rangers 1— When Joey Gallo batted with bases empty, Houston played four guys in OF with no fielders on left side of the infield. Actually, Altuve was in the OF too, in short RF, so they had five guys in the outfield.

                      7) McDonald’s All-American Darius Bazley decommitted from Syracuse, becoming the first top high school prospect to choose turning pro in the G League, where he’ll make $26,000, instead of spending a few months in college. Maybe he’ll get a small shoe contract.

Bazley is a 6-9 kid from the Cincinnati area; he’ll sign a pro contract when he turns 18 in June. Big gamble on his part— if he were to get hurt, then what? If he gets hurt in college, he’s still in college and has the school’s resources at his disposal. He won’t be property of an NBA team next year, just the G-League team. He’ll be eligible for the 2019 NBA Draft.

                      6) White Sox 11, Royals 4— Matt Davidson hit three homers for Chicago; maybe I should’ve picked him up in my fantasy league, back when he was available. Whoops.

                      5) RIP Rusty Staub 73, who played 23 years in the big leagues, breaking in with the Houston Colt .45’s in 1963. Le Grand Orange, as he was known in Montreal, made six All-Star teams and had a career OB% of .362 with 292 career homers. He owned a popular restaurant in Manhattan for years after he retired from playing.

Think about how times have changed; in 1963, there was a baseball team named after a gun and an NBA team called the Baltimore Bullets.

                      4) Braves 8, Phillies 5— Phils led this game 5-2 in 8th, but Atlanta rallied, and Nick Markakis hit a walk-off homer to send Braves fans home happy.

Atlanta catcher Tyler Flowers is the first player this season to leave a game with an injury— he suffered an oblique injury in the second inning.

                      3) Orioles 3, Twins 2 (11)— Not 100% sure, but Zach Duke may very well be the first pitcher ever to strike out four batters in an inning on Opening Day- he struck out four Orioles in the 7th inning.

Adam Jones hit a walk-off homer in the 11th inning to send everyone home happy, after Orioles blew a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning.

                      2) Brewers 2, Padres 1 (12)— Bill Schroeder is a former big league catcher who is a really good analyst; Padres had two on, one out in the 7th inning Thursday with Milwaukee leading 1-0, and Schroeder says more than once (three times??) that reliever Josh Hader can get Austin Hedges out with a slider, almost like he is trying to use telepathy to get him to throw it.

Eventually, Hader throws the slider and strikes Hedges out.

1— Louisville QB Lamar Jackson threw 59 passes, took snaps under center in front of reps from all 32 NFL teams Thursday, but he wouldn’t run a 40-yard dash, because everyone knows he is fast enough to play QB and he ain’t interested in being a wide receiver. Good for him.

                              • LEADING OFF: Scherzer starts for Nats, Stanton swings away
                                March 30, 2018

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

                                TRY AGAIN

Max Scherzer begins his bid for a third straight NL Cy Young Award when he starts for Washington at Great American Ball Park. Opening day in Cincinnati was pushed back a day because of rain - the forecast calls for a dry afternoon with temperatures around 50 at game time. Homer Bailey is set to start for the Reds. The game will mark the major league managerial debut of Nationals skipper Dave Martinez.

                                POWER SHOW

Yankees fans are rooting for Giancarlo Stanton to provide an encore after his power-packed debut for New York. Stanton, who led the majors with 59 homers last year and was the NL MVP, hit two home runs and doubled in the opener at Toronto. Blue Jays righty Aaron Sanchez draws the assignment of trying to shut down Stanton, Aaron Judge and the Yanks. He posted an AL-best 3.00 ERA in 2016, but made just eight starts last season because of persistent blister issues.

                                GOING IN GAME TWO

After making three straight opening day starts for the Astros, Dallas Keuchel was bumped from the opener by Justin Verlander this year. Instead, the bearded left-hander will start Game 2 for Houston against the Rangers. Keuchel told reporters ''he wasn't happy by any means'' when manager A.J. Hinch announced Verlander as his No. 1 starter, though he also conceded ''the guy deserves it.'' Verlander threw six shutout innings in a 4-1 win Thursday. Keuchel draws Texas right-hander Doug Fister, who signed a $4 million, one-year free agent deal in November.

                                IS PRICE RIGHT?

David Price makes his season debut against the Rays a day after Boston's bullpen blew a 4-0 lead in a 6-4 loss. The Red Sox left-hander endured a frustrating 2017 season, with injuries limiting him to 74 2/3 innings. Price looked sharp this spring, posting a 2.25 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 12 innings. He'll oppose hard-throwing lefty Blake Snell.

                                JOEY'S TIME

The Padres surprisingly announced hotshot prospect Joey Lucchesi would start in place of injured Dinelson Lamet, even though the left-hander has only pitched 60 1/3 innings at Double-A. The 24-year-old was a second-round pick in 2016 and went 11-7 with a 2.20 ERA between Class A and Double-A last season. Perhaps more importantly, he had a 1.54 ERA in four spring starts, making him a candidate for his debut when Lamet strained his right elbow Sunday.
