First Ever Tournament Win, Couple Questions..

Hey Guys,

I know you guys are all big on poker so maybe you can help me out, here is my story.

Sat down after Christmas celebrations were over and was looking over my 5 Dimes account and saw there was a Poker Room. With nothing left to do tonight I decided I would play some cards to pass the time. Since I’m not big on Poker at all I decided to transfer $100 bucks in there. I got playing some normal cash games and ended up losing most of the $100 bucks. Eventually after about half an hour I bought into a $5 tournament with $100 guaranteed prize money. You started with 1500 chips and there were about 20-25 people in it. After 1 hour I was still alive with 800 chips. I ended up doubling up and took 3400 into the second break. Then I made the final table, I had the least amount of chips but somehow managed to get to 10000 and the chip lead with 5 people remaining. Here is my question, there were 5 people left and I had around 12,500 chips. The other guys all ranged in chip counts of 5000-8000. I was playing really tight and folding every hand I got hoping to make the money list. I ended up getting QQ, after about 15 seconds of thinking weather to fold or not, I ended up throwing a bet of 1000, the blinds were 150/300. Right away the guy next to me folded and the final player rose to 2000. Now seeing QQ got me all pumped and I called. The flop was 3 4 5. He went all in for 3000 more. I ended up calling and losing of course to A 10, he hit and ace on the river. Should I of even ended up getting into the hand to begin with. I had to survive two more player eliminations and I would get paid out. I wasn’t sure what to do, is the right play to fold or keep raising with the good hand? What would you do in that position...?

I ended up surviving all the action in the final three and ended up winning the tournament with a high card king and winning $100 making a total profit of $35

I know it may sound like a dumb question, I just want to know what you guys think the right play is for the next poker adventure I have.

The only thing I would have done differently myself was reraise him enough to put him all in if he wanted to call after his initial raise. Its easier to go all in than call someone else's. He probably would have folded and you would have won the hand. You have to think ahead to the point where you know if he makes a big bet are you going to call it? If the answer is yes, make the big bet yourself and put him on the defensive.

So your saying risk your place in the money for the sake of taking another guy out?

Depends what the other places pay. If you are happy to just make the money you play differently than if you are playing to win it.

When your late in a tourny. You need to be very aggressive. So with QQ You gotta push . His reraise was weak. I woulda put him all in. If your just trying to cash then auto fold/check. Play to win, and youll find you pick up lots of chips just being aggressive.
