Friday’s List of 13: Things I’m looking for this weekend

13) How tired are the Falcons of hearing about last year’s Super Bowl? Now they get to visit Foxboro the week after blowing a 17-0 halftime lead to Miami. Matt Ryan went to Boston College, so a homecoming of sorts for him.

12) Michigan beat Penn State 49-10 last year; Wolverines are 5-1, but it is a shaky 5-1 and they are playing a backup QB- they needed OT to beat Indiana last week.

11) Brett Hundley gets his first NFL start at home against New Orleans; no pressure, replacing Aaron Rodgers Saints are actually a road favorite in this game.

10) Arizona Wildcats ran ball for 882 yards in their last two games; now they’re a road favorite at Cal— Golden Bears upset Washington State last week. Interesting game.

9) First round of rematches this weekend, three of them. Can the Jets sweep Miami? Eagles sweep Washington? Denver sweep the Chargers?

8) USC-Notre Dame is a stellar primetime game Saturday night. Trojans lost their last two visits to South Bend.

7) Cardinals-Rams in England is a big game in NFC West; Adrian Peterson added a running element to the Arizona offense last week. Both teams are a LONG way from home.

6) Think the boosters in Knoxville are happy that Tennessee is a 35-point underdog this week in Tuscaloosa? Hopefully Butch Jones has his resume updated, because he is going to need a job in a few weeks. His bank account will be healthy, though.

5) Giants got their first win last week, now Seattle visits Swamp Stadium coming off its bye. Giants’ young WR’s will have hard time getting open against a stingy Seahawk defense.

4) Texas is 3-3, losing to USC/Oklahoma by total of 8 points; now Oklahoma State comes calling, another tough game. State scored 48 ppg in winning its first three road games this year.

3) Jacksonville is +11 in turnovers in its wins, -1 in its losses; they have a very winnable game in Indy against a Colt team that might be without Andrew Luck for the whole season now. Jacoby Brissett hasn’t played badly, but Indy has been outscored 85-22 in the 4th quarter this year.

2) Louisville beat Florida State 63-20 LY, but Cardinals lost their last two games, allowing 84 points. Seminoles are struggling (2-3) with a true freshman QB who is skinny as hell- their only two wins are over Wake Forest/Duke.

1) Trap game for the Titans, a road game after a Monday night win. Winless Browns are going back to DeShone Kizer at QB; maybe they should’ve drafted Deshaun Watson. Ya think?

PHOENIX -- Lonzo Ball had 29 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in his second NBA game to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 132-130 win over the Phoenix Suns on Friday.

Ball made only one shot and scored three points in his NBA debut on Wednesday, a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. But Ball turned it on Friday, shooting 12 of 27 from the field and barely missing his first triple-double.

T.J. Warren had a chance to tie the game with 1.2 seconds left and the Suns down by two. But he missed the first free throw, purposely missed the second, grabbed his own rebound but shot an air ball as time expired.

Brandon Ingram had 25 points and Brook Lopez had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Lakers.

Eric Bledsoe scored 28 points and Devin Booker had 25 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists for the Suns. Warren added 24 for Phoenix.

MILWAUKEE -- LeBron James scored 24 points and Kevin Love recorded his second double-double of the season as Cleveland spoiled Milwaukee's home opener.

James, who admitted earlier in the week that he still wasn't fully recovered from a left ankle injury that limited him to one preseason game, played 37 minutes and hit 10 of 16 shots while dishing out eight assists.

Love had 17 points with 12 rebounds while Kyle Korver also finished with 17, hitting 5 of 6 of his 3-point attempts.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led Milwaukee (1-1) with 34 points on 15-of-22 shooting with eight rebounds and eight assists, but the Bucks were held to 46.9 percent shooting and were 11-for-35 from beyond the arc.

INDIANAPOLIS -- C.J. McCollum returned from a one-game suspension to score 28 points as Portland improved to 2-0 on the road to open the season.

Portland (2-0) opened its season Wednesday night with a dominating 124-76 victory at Phoenix, then continued its solid play in Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Evan Turner added 17 points for the Trail Blazers, and Damian Lillard finished with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Al-Farouq Aminu added 16 points and 16 rebounds

Guard Victor Oladipo and reserve TJ Leaf led Indiana (1-1) with 17 points apiece.

The Pacers played without starting center Myles Turner, who has a concussion and a sore neck after contributing 21 points and 14 rebounds in Wednesday's opening-night 140-131 victory against Brooklyn. Turner also will miss Saturday's game at Miami. He will be in concussion protocol until he is cleared to play again.

PHILADELPHIA -- Kyrie Irving scored seven of his 21 points in a game-ending 18-8 run as short-handed Boston earned its first victory of the season.

Al Horford added 17 points and nine rebounds for Boston, which lost newly acquired forward Gordon Hayward, likely for the season, to a dislocated left ankle and fractured tibia in Tuesday's opener in Cleveland. The Celtics (1-2) were also without starting guard Marcus Smart, who sprained both ankles in Wednesday's home opener to Milwaukee, and forward Marcus Morris, who is out with a knee injury.

J.J. Redick scored 19 points for the Sixers (0-2). Joel Embiid had 11 points and 14 rebounds, but missed his first eight shots and finished 4 of 16 from the floor. Rookie Ben Simmons had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

WASHINGTON -- Otto Porter scored 28 points and John Wall had 26 points and 10 assists as Washington improved to 2-0.

Bradley Beal finished with 25 points as the Wizards held on after letting a 15-point fourth-quarter lead slip away.

Reggie Jackson scored 21 points and Avery Bradley had 18 for Detroit (1-1). Detroit center Andre Drummond had nine points and 12 rebounds before fouling out with 9:15 remaining with his team trailing 98-83. The Pistons immediately rallied with a 14-0 run and eventually took the lead at 104-102. Washington responded with a 9-2 run to regain the lead.

Nets 126, Magic 121

NEW YORK -- D'Angelo Russell scored six of his 17 points down the stretch as Brooklyn withstood a career-high 41 points from Nikola Vucevic to win its home opener.

Russell made 8 of 16 shots after getting 30 points in his Brooklyn debut Wednesday in Indiana. He converted a crossover layup and then executed a nifty foul line jumper while being defended by D.J. Augustin with 83 seconds left for a 119-116 lead.

DeMarre Carroll also scored 17 and grabbed eight rebounds for the Nets.

Vucevic surpassed his previous career high of 37 and also grabbed 12 rebounds. He made 17 of 22 shots, including a career-high six 3-pointers but missed a short jumper while being defended by Carroll and committed a turnover in the final minute.

Hornets 109, Hawks 91

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Kemba Walker scored 26 points and Dwight Howard torched his former team for 20 points and 15 rebounds, and Charlotte rallied from a 20-point deficit to win.

The Hornets trailed 40-20 with 8:52 left in the second quarter, but closed the gap to 56-49 at halftime and then dominated the second half with a 24-0 run in the third quarter. They outscored Atlanta 35-17 in the period.

The Hawks (1-1) were led by Dennis Schroder with 25 points.

Timberwolves 100, Jazz 97

MINNEAPOLIS -- Andrew Wiggins scored 21 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Minnesota Timberwolves in a nail-biting win over Utah.

Jimmy Butler added 13 points for Minnesota, which overcame 26 turnovers and was just 7 of 22 from 3-point territory.

Jamal Crawford provided the big closing flurry with 17 points, all in the fourth quarter. His 3-pointer with 27.5 seconds left was the key shot of the game.

Rodney Hood led Utah with 20 points but had to be carried off the floor by teammates in the fourth quarter after suffering a left leg injury.

Kings 93, Mavericks 88

DALLAS -- George Hill poured in 21 points Friday night to lead Sacramento to the road win.

The key basket came when Hill grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to put the Kings (1-1) ahead 91-86 with 16.4 seconds remaining.

Harrison Barnes paced the Mavericks (0-2) with 24 points. The Mavs played without rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr., who has a left knee effusion.

Warriors 128, Pelicans 120

NEW ORLEANS -- Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Kevin Durant combined for 83 points and Golden State rebounded from its season-opening loss to beat New Orleans.

The Pelicans scored 39 first-quarter points to take a 13-point lead, but the Warriors worked their way back.

Thompson finished with 33 points and Curry had 28 for the Warriors, and Durant had 22 points and a career-high seven blocks.

Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins had 35 points apiece for the Pelicans.

12) Had to stay away from Twitter late Thursday, as Dodger fans came out of the woodwork to celebrate their first NL title since 1988. I’ve got nothing against the Dodgers, but any mention of the 1988 World Series makes my stomach churn— I prefer the ’74 World Series.

11) Raiders 31, Chiefs 30— Great ballgame, bizarre ending, with an overturned TD, offensive pass interference and two defensive holding penalties, all in the last 0:18 of the game. Fun game to watch; Oakland’s win makes the AFC West race a lot more interesting.

10) Raiders now have 10 TD’s of 20+ yards this season; 10 of their 17 offensive TD’s came came on plays of 20+ yards. Buffalo Bills’ longest TD play this season? 12 yards.

9) James Harden has averaged over 10 free throws attempted per game the last three years; he is a career 85.4% free throw shooter. It is amazing to me how many times opponents let him drive to his strong hand— he is a lefty— figure it out!!!

Speaking of the Rockets, Chris Paul is already out 2-4 weeks with a bum knee. That didn’t take long. TNT studio guys were saying Thursday that Paul isn’t a good fit with the Rockets’ style anyway.

8) Big 14 basketball media day was in New York City this week, which is weird; they’re having the conference tournament at Madison Square Garden in March, as they try and expand their footprint with Rutgers, Penn State, Maryland now in the league.

But the Big 14 is a midwestern league; would think having media day in Chicago would be a more normal thing to do.

7) Memphis 42, Houston 38— Horrible loss for Cougars, who led 31-14 with 1:31 left in third quarter and 38-28 with 5:51 left in game. Memphis was down 17-0 at halftime- you do the math, Tigers scored 42 points in the second half.

6) Oldest guys in the NBA? Vince Carter, Manu Ginobili, who are both 40 years old.

5) Purdue’s basketball team played in the World University games this summer, which allowed them to have 30 practices and play 11 games, a huge advantage over other teams who take these overseas trips- those teams are allowed only 10 practices.

4) Detroit Tigers hired former Twins manager Ron Gardenhire as their new manager; he was 1,068-1,039 in 13 years with the Twins, going 6-21 in playoff games.

3) Why are foul tips not reviewable via instant replay? Anytime an obvious mistake is made by the umpires, the people in New York City should beep the crew chief on the field and correct things. The missed call on the foul tip in Game 4 of Dodger-Cub series was embarrassing.

2) Clippers clocked the Lakers Thursday night; Lonzo Ball had 3 points, 4 assists in his NBA debut. It is only one game, but if Lonzo is a marked man because his father can’t shut up, then that is too bad, but he’ll get through it. He will be a very good NBA player, in time.

1) Cam Newton skipped a couple of media sessions this week, which probably results in a fine; he can’t win this battle long-term, because he is a QB and the media needs access to him— it is part of why he makes so much money.

I’m not saying Newton is wrong; maybe he just has to adopt the Marshawn Lynch strategy of showing up and saying nothing. If he thinks he is being baited by certain writers, he has to rise above it and find ways to get around all that, for his sake and his employer’s sake.
